Why it’s on the list: I always remember Billy Connolly doing some joke where he says that people say “I’ve been all around the world, but I’ve never been to Scotland”. Well I certainly haven’t been all over the world, but equally I haven’t been all over the UK yet either.

How/when I’ll judge this task to be completed: When I have visited three UK cities for the first time.

1. St David’s and the Cathedral Close
Visited St David’s during our holiday to Wales. A bit disappointed actually. OK I knew it was Britain’s smallest city (pop. less than 2000) but I wasn’t expecting it to be quite so provincial. It just felt like a typical small seaside town! Very busy, very touristy, very expensive. Pretty enough, but I wouldn’t fancy staying there as I’d end up bankrupt just trying to feed myself! Mind you, the cathedral was hugely impressive, as were the ruins of the Bishop’s palace.

2. Canterbury
Had a quick walk round Canterbury whilst staying with a new friend. The cathedral looked fab but I had the kids with me, it would have cost £6 each to take them in and I know Dan especially would have been bored stupid, so I’ll leave that back for another time! The city is small but rather lovely though, an interesting mix of contemporary shops in amongst very old buildings.

3. Sheffield

Went to Sheffield to visit Steve’s brother and family and had a quick guided tour round the city. Really liked it – much more cultural than I expected, with art galleries and public art installations all over the place. Popped into the cathedral too – very small and not overly impressive from outside, but the stained glass was good, especially the modern bit high in the roof.
